Lexi Trumble was quoted in Ms. Magazine about how the landmark civil rights law Title IX intersects with existing federal guidance on name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities for male and female college athletes.
Lexi spoke about a memo that was rescinded on February 12, 2025, by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR). That memo had provided guidance under the Biden administration to ensure equal NIL opportunities and resources for both male and female student-athletes.
"From a legal perspective, the rescission of that memo is not particularly monumental," Lexi said. "It just reiterated a legal standard that colleges and university administrators have been operating under for years, which is that sports-related money has to be allocated equitably, and equitable has different definitions and applications depending on what bucket of funds we’re talking about."
Colleges and universities have a continued obligation under Title IX to provide publicity resources equitably, Lexi added.
