Nina Gupta is a trusted advisor to governing boards, superintendents, college or university presidents, C-suite executives, and other leaders in the education industry. Clients turn to her for strategic guidance on how to bring the mission and vision of their institutions to life, including through developing policies and coordinating the full scope of their legal needs. Her clients include leaders at K-12 schools, independent colleges, and public universities, as well as vendors and educators, in Georgia and throughout the Southeast.
Nina has particular experience advising clients in high-profile, complex situations, including as general counsel of Atlanta Public Schools. She understands the myriad considerations her clients must take into account as they work to advance strategic priorities and investigate, manage, and prevent crises.
She has provided or coordinated counsel on virtually every element of a large school system or university’s operations, from disability and discrimination law to real estate and finance. She routinely counsels on all aspects of Title IX, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and related statutes.
A signature example of her work was shepherding the governing body of a state’s public colleges and universities through an overhaul of sexual misconduct policies. She helped design policies, develop training, and guide an oversight panel that included state lawmakers and chancellors. Recognizing that a cultural evolution on campus takes more than legal work, she also provided practical guidance on bringing the new policies to life.
Nina’s drive to serve the education industry stems from her own upbringing. Her family moved to America when she was 4 years old, and public schools in Georgia and other states gave her the opportunity to write a new story for herself and her family. She has served the community in other ways as well, including as a board member for the Partnership Against Domestic Violence and as a pro bono attorney representing abused and neglected children.
